Chapter 21

They stood by the front door of the beach house. Gian side-eyed Warren as he repeatedly fidgeted and checked his watch. The text reply had come in forty minutes ago. His mom likely nagged the shit out of his father while she packed a bag for them and didn’t stop pushing him until they were racing on the interstate a la Mario Andretti.

He rubbed a hand over his mouth, covering the smile as he imagined his mother pushing and his father complying.

Gian suspected his parents were as excited as Warren was nervous. This was the first time his parents were officially meeting someone he dated. In the back of his mind, he knew it spoke volumes on how much Warren meant to him.

He wanted them to meet.

And he wanted them to love him.

After the no-holds-barred reveal earlier, he sensed Warren needed a triple dose of Benedetti affection. Warren hadn’t been close to his father, but that hadn’t stopped him from seeking his father’s approval and acceptance even though he had essentially been shunned. But it was the loss of his mother that threw Gian off most. He couldn’t wrap his head around the pain Warren had witnessed or the mind-fuck situation he had been forced to endure.

It was no wonder Warren was so guarded.

He was a loner by circumstance, an only child sent off to school at twelve, ignored by his father, then deprived of his mother at twenty-two. He had honed his book, street, and business smarts and held it all together with a fierce bravado. But behind that stoic facade was a man desperately searching for a connection even though he feared it.

Finally, Gian understood why.

Honesty wasn’t just Gian’s aphrodisiac. It had been the one thing he sought most and had been missing from his prior relationships.

He had known it was important but hadn’t realized how essential it was until Warren had served it up on a silver platter with a side of trust. Brutally honest and completely vulnerable, Warren had trusted him enough to painfully reveal his most haunting memory.

And that was something Gian would never take for granted. Not for a single second.

If Warren gave him the chance, Gian knew he would love him profoundly.

The way Warren deserved to be loved.

“It’s been forty-nine minutes. Are they usually late?” Warren asked, shifting his weight from one foot to the other.

“I’ll let you tell my almost seventy-year-old parents that they didn’t break enough speeding laws to get here on time.”

Warren ran both hands through his hair. “They can have the full hour.”

“That’s what I thought.” Gian kissed the side of Warren’s head. The poor man had no idea the whirlwind that was headed his way.

“What if they don’t like me?”

Gian looked into those hazel eyes and the genuine worry staring back at him. “Not possible.”

Warren nodded and chewed his bottom lip. “I just don’t want them to be disappointed.”

Before he had a chance to respond, Gian heard the entry gate opening and spotted the white SUV. He leaned over to whisper in Warren’s ear.
